Property code: OC-DRUM

This wonderful property is a 17th-century character cottage close to the quayside in the picturesque fishing village of Appledore. With low-hanging beams and an original steep curving staircase, this is a characterful cottage with all the modern conveniences needed for a family holiday. Explore the vibrant village before coming back to your cosy abode with underfloor heating.

This double-fronted cottage opens directly into a spacious beamed living room (mind your head, it’s 6ft in height!) with comfortable settees surrounding a wood burner in an attractive inglenook. A doorway leads through to the rear of the cottage where a spacious open-plan room offers a pristine and modern kitchen/diner with underfloor heating. The attractive dining area leads into a large conservatory with more comfortable seating and underfloor heating for the cooler seasons. In good weather, this living space naturally extends into a fully enclosed terraced patio garden – ideal for relaxation and alfresco dining. A washing machine is housed in a utility cupboard. A steep, winding staircase (as would be expected in a cottage of this age) leads to two bedrooms on the first floor, a good-sized double room and a small twin room, each with window seats.

Appledore has been a thriving fishing and trading village since the 14th century with a long maritime history that can be seen in the North Devon Maritime Museum located close by. The pretty picture-postcard setting of colourful narrow streets lined with flowers and a myriad of boats bobbing up and down on the estuary provide a fabulous backdrop for memorable holidays. Along the colourful cobbled lanes, delightful cafes, traditional fishermen's pubs, and individual shops and galleries can be found, whilst in season, a short ferry ride takes you across the river to the estuary beach and further facilities at Instow (5.5 miles by car). With 2 miles of golden sands and surfing at nearby Westward Ho! (3 miles), Instow with its sailing, fishing and water sports just across the estuary, and numerous local attractions close by, this cottage provides an ideal holiday base at any time of year.

We have stayed in a lit of cottages and this rates right up there. The location was fantastic and the added bonus of an allocated parking space was really convenient. It had the best of both worlds with a lovely cottage feel in the living room and bedrooms but with a modern kitchen, dining room and conservatory. The cottage is one of the besRead moret equipped one that we have ever stayed in. We will almost certainly be returning as we had such a great week, even storm Ciaran couldn't spoil it. Hide

The weather wasn't the greatest but the cottage was so cosy and comfortable that we were able to relax with plenty of spaces to sit and relax with the family and our dog. Drum cottage was spotless, the beds were comfortable and the rooms airy - if we required anything it was good to know that there was a local contact although not required. There wRead moreere some great local restaurants and useful information for ordering online in the kitchen. Some lovely pubs with live music plus walks for the dog and great places to visit not far from Appledore - we were well placed to explore North Devon including the local beaches and so much more. We really felt we were home from home and thoroughly enjoyed our stay despite only a few sunny days and recommend Drum cottage which is truly an old historic dwelling which used to be a pub but with all the mod cons. beautifully decorated cottage , ideal location for walking into Appledore or as a base for the wider area. The addition of the parking permit was extremely valuable as parking is limited. Especially loved the converseratory at the back of the cottage it was light and airy. The stairs are quirky , I would not recommend for the infirm or those withRead more toddlers or young children.
