If the Atlantic rollers seem daunting, the tidal Rock Sea Pool, created in the town’s Victorian heyday, offers swimmers a calm haven. Northam Burrows Country Park has a wealth of wildlife and there’s an adventure golf course and go-kart circuit behind the beach. The Big Sheep theme park (2 miles) and Milky Way Adventure Park (9 miles) offer a great family day out, while historic villages to explore include Appledore (3 miles) and Clovelly (12 miles).
